Associate or Full Professor in Economics and Director of the Institute for Economic Research, Faculty of Economics, Università della Svizzera italiana (USI)

The Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) is a young and lively university, a hub of opportunity open to the world where students are offered a quality interdisciplinary education in which they can be fully engaged and take center stage, and where our researchers can count on having the space to freely pursue their initiative.

Established in 1996, USI is in constant evolution, always taking on new challenges while remaining true to its three guiding principles: quality, openness, and responsibility. Facing the challenges of today’s globalized economies entails the ability to interpret and manage complexity. With professors who are at the forefront of research in their respective fields, the Faculty of Economics is the ideal venue to acquire and further develop competence, flexibility, and intellectual curiosity to identify fundamental issues and face them with creativity and talent.

The Faculty of Economics invites applications from candidates with an international research profile for a position as Associate or Full Professor in Economics. Outstanding applicants from all fields of applied economics will be considered. Particular attention will be given to candidates conducting research in one or more of these areas: regional and urban economics, public finance, labor economics, and environmental and energy economics.

The position also involves serving as Director of the Institute for Economic Research (IRE), which conducts applied research on issues of regional importance chosen in coordination with the Cantonal Department of Finance and Economy (DFE). Through its three observatories (O-Tur, O-De, O-Fpe), IRE conducts research studies and policy evaluations, serves as consultancy of cantonal policy makers and monitors the local economy, with a particular focus on the labor market, as well as the tourism sector, public sector, and the energy sector. The research activities of IRE are part of USI’s mandate from the Canton of Ticino.

1. The position

The Faculty of Economics of USI provides a young and dynamic environment with strong research competences in the areas of economics, finance, and management. The position is primarily affiliated with the Institute for Economic Research (Istituto di Ricerche Economiche, IRE) and can also be affiliated with the Institute of Economics (Istituto di Economia Politica, IdEP). Please refer to https://idep.usi.ch and https://www.ire.usi.ch/en for more information.

2. The candidate’s profile

The ideal candidate has a strong publication record in top/top-field economics journals on policy-relevant topics (including – but not restricted to – regional and urban economics, public finance, labor economics, and environmental and energy economics). Academic achievements should be complemented by a demonstrated ability to lead a research group and generate external funding. The successful candidate is fluent in Italian and willing to invest in the knowledge of the local economy of the Canton of Ticino. The required academic qualification is a doctoral degree in Economics (PhD).

USI is aware of the various and different backgrounds of its employees and, as an institution that promotes diversity and inclusion, USI particularly encourages applications by female candidates and of all under-represented groups.

3. Teaching load

The standard teaching load of 18 ECTS is reduced while the candidate serves as Director of IRE. The size of the teaching reduction will be part of the contract negotiation.

4. Residence

Professors are asked to reside in the Canton of Ticino, which is part of the Italian-speaking area of Switzerland. The new professor is expected to provide consistent participation in the academic and institutional activities of the university.

5. Salary and contract

The salary is determined in accordance with university regulations and is competitive with leading European institutions. The precise salary level will be determined based on the candidate’s experience and academic credentials.

6. Application files

The application should include the following documents:

  • Cover letter
  • Motivation letter to apply for the directorship of IRE
  • Your vision for IRE
  • Research statement
  • Teaching statement
  • Detailed CV
  • Publication list
  • Copies of three of the most representative papers
  • Names and addresses of three references

7. Deadline

Applications received by August 31, 2025, will be given priority. Applications are welcome and reviewed until the position is filled.

The Initiative for Financial Decision-Making (IFDM) at the Stanford Graduate School of Business invites applications for postdoctoral fellowships under the supervision of Professor Annamaria Lusardi, the Initiative’s faculty director. The in-person fellowship begins in summer 2026 (no later than September 1, 2026), runs for one year, and may be renewed assuming performance at or above expectations; a two-year term is strongly preferred.

The fellowship centers on empirical research related to financial literacy and financial decision-making. IFDM builds on more than a decade of research by the Global Financial Literacy Excellence Center (GFLEC), founded by Professor Lusardi, which has developed widely used tools to measure financial literacy, advanced the field’s research agenda, and shaped financial education programs in the U.S. and globally. More information about that work is at www.gflec.org.

IFDM’s cutting-edge research program applies data, economic theory, and analytics to understand what drives household financial literacy and money management. Planned projects include analyses of: (i) financial fragility trends among U.S. adults over the past twelve years; (ii) risk comprehension and its effects on investor behavior; (iii) how financial literacy influences household financial outcomes; and (iv) the impact of educational interventions on financial knowledge and behavior.

Postdoctoral fellows are expected to produce academic research from the Initiative’s agenda and will work closely and directly with all members of the Initiative, including the director, co-authors of academic papers, PhD students, and other postdoctoral fellows. This is a dedicated research community with plenty of interaction and the expectation of both working collaboratively in smaller groups but also independently on projects. Progress on the research is required to be presented regularly to a broader group of stakeholders of the Initiative. The fellow is expected to be actively involved in the Initiative’s intellectual community by participating in meetings, research lunches/colloquia, and potentially joint projects. The fellow is also encouraged to integrate with the broader research community at Stanford by attending seminars and other events.

The primary selection criterion is research excellence in household/personal finance or applied economics and a clear interest in contributing to the Initiative’s research. The position requires someone with a strong background in the field, i.e. a PhD in Economics or Finance. A focus on household finance or program evaluation is preferred.

Further inquiries about the position can be directed to the IFDM: stanfordifdm@stanford.edu.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are central to our mission at the GSB. We believe we will best enact our educational and research missions when all members of our community are able to leverage the experiences and ideas of others, embrace different viewpoints, feel that they belong, and know that their contributions are valued.

Required Qualifications:

- Doctoral degree conferred prior to appointment start date.

Required Application Materials:

For full consideration, please submit application materials by January 31, 2026. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. International applicants may be sponsored for J1 visas. Fellows eligible for OPT are encouraged to use it during the fellowship.
1. A research statement summarizing your research, future research plans, and your interest in the Initiative for Financial Decision-Making’s postdoctoral position
2. A current CV
3. Up to two working papers/publications/work in progress.
4. Arrange for at least three letters of recommendation to be submitted by the deadline. Further letters up to five are permissible.

Stanford is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.

Senior Research Associate (job market)

GiveWell is a research organization that identifies and funds cost-effective giving opportunities, focusing on global health and well-being. Our work is funded by thousands of donors who rely on our research to inform their giving. We’ve grown from directing $1.5 million in 2010 to directing ~$400 million in 2024.

Summary

GiveWell is seeking exceptional Senior Research Associates to help direct hundreds of millions of dollars annually to the most cost-effective global health and poverty alleviation programs. You’ll have an outsized influence on our funding decisions and help us save and improve lives on a global scale.

You’ll execute ambitious research agendas, answer complex questions, and inform high-impact grantmaking decisions by combining rigorous evidence review, cost-effectiveness modeling, and thoughtful judgment.

Senior Research Associates will have the opportunity to develop into Senior Researcher or Program Officer roles, leading research agendas or owning complex grantmaking portfolios. We’re open to a wide variety of professional development options depending on your preferences and our needs.

This job listing is currently only open to economics PhD students on the job market. If you’re curious about how this job might look different from other opportunities you’re considering on the job market, check out this short doc written by Alex Cohen (Principal Researcher; cross-cutting team lead).

The role

You’ll join a small grantmaking team to execute ambitious research agendas, sifting through the countless questions we could try to answer and honing in on those that matter most. Your decisions will inform the allocation of hundreds of millions of dollars to dozens of grantees.

Your practical work will combine empirical evidence review, cost-effectiveness modeling, discussions with subject matter experts, and developing your own judgment. In the course of your work, you might approach questions like these:

Responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing interventions (e.g., vaccine demand generation, vitamin A supplementation, seasonal malaria chemoprevention) at various levels of depth to refine our view about the cost-effectiveness of a particular intervention and recommend either deprioritization or further work. Researchers review existing empirical evidence about intervention impacts, build models, speak with subject matter experts about particular interventions, and use their judgment to come up with a bottom line. Examples of this work are available on our intervention reports page.
  • Building cost-effectiveness models to estimate the costs and benefits of a particular intervention. These models take into account a wide variety of considerations, including: one's prior estimate for an intervention's impact, the strength of the evidence, the size of the effects, the similarity between the context in which an intervention was studied and will be implemented, negative and/or offsetting effects, and how funding this intervention would affect decisions by other actors (e.g., local government, donor governments). See more on our page about our cost-effectiveness models.
  • Reviewing specific grantmaking opportunities. We receive and solicit requests for funding on an ongoing basis. Researchers investigate each of these opportunities to determine whether or not they should receive funding. Reviewers discuss each grant opportunity with the applying organization, consider its plans and assess the likelihood it will achieve them, estimate the cost-effectiveness of a grant and forecast its likelihood of success. When necessary, they solicit feedback from outside experts (e.g., academics, government officials) about the opportunity.
  • Tackle thorny research questions with creative approaches. We often need to answer questions that don’t have clear answers in published academic journals or other data sources (see some examples above), but which nevertheless matter significantly to our bottom-line funding decisions. You’ll come up with creative approaches to answer these questions, and your work will often influence the funding decisions of many of GiveWell’s research subteams.
  • Building relationships with experts relevant to our work, for example, academics who specialize in interventions we are reviewing (e.g., malaria, malnutrition treatment, in-line water chlorination), leaders and program staff at organizations we are considering for funding, and program staff at foundations who are also evaluating where to allocate funds.
  • Publishing reports and blog posts on our website. Transparency is a core value of ours and we aim to publish as much supporting information regarding our conclusions as we can. Researchers write up our findings and reasoning for publication on our website or summarize key points from their work in blog posts.

What is career development like?

After gaining experience on the team, Senior Research Associates have the opportunity to develop into Senior Researchers, who lead the development of our research agendas. Senior Researchers may then pursue a few pathways for career development based on their preferences and GiveWell’s needs. Some choose to develop wider and more autonomous research agendas as individual contributors, while others take on people management responsibilities. Another potential pathway is to transition into a Program Officer position, in which you’d own a high-impact, cost-effective grantmaking portfolios by deepening your expertise, growing your networks, and understanding the broader context within a specific grantmaking area. Program Officers think through questions like:

  • How should we balance exploring and seeding new, smaller opportunities with funding cost-effective opportunities at scale today?
  • How can we triangulate empirical evidence against expert opinion on other qualitative features, like organizational track record?
  • What is research we can fund today that could substantially impact our grantmaking five years from now?
  • How much uncertainty are we willing to accept before making a grant? What key research questions do we need to answer before making a grant, and which ones can we deprioritize or answer later?

Team structure

Our research department has over 50 people, and is currently organized into eight teams:

  • Five of the teams (Water, Livelihoods, Nutrition, Malaria, and Vaccines) focus on specific areas of grantmaking.
  • The New Areas team focuses on interventions in domains that are new to GiveWell.
  • The Cross-Cutting team focuses on methodological issues, research quality, and other big-picture concerns that cut across all of our research work.
  • The Commons team provides generalized research support to each of the other teams, including landscaping research, vetting, and publishing.

In most cases, we hire Senior Research Associates without knowing which subteam they’ll eventually sit on. We aim to expose new researchers to different types of work and parts of the team over several months to inform their eventual subteam placement. (We might settle on a subteam more quickly if new hires bring specific, specialized expertise.)

Team values

We think our research team has unique qualities:

  • We care deeply and centrally about finding and sharing truth. Truth-seeking is one of our core values. We post our mistakes and we prize our team members who keep our culture of free-flowing feedback strong.
  • We are independent. We focus 100% on finding the most cost-effective opportunities to save and improve lives. Our researchers assist in communicating our research findings to the public and our donors, and on occasion we provide tailored advice to ultra-high-net-worth donors who want to rely on our expertise to direct their giving—but we never ask our researchers to trade off against honesty, or to hide their real beliefs.
  • We don’t waste time. Once it’s clear that a particular research question is unlikely to change our bottom-line funding recommendation, we drop it as quickly as possible. We encourage our research staff to constantly re-evaluate their portfolios and only work on the highest-priority questions.
  • Lean research team = huge personal impact. Our research team of just over 50 people directs hundreds of millions of dollars annually.
  • We work well together. Our research team is lean because we’re able to attract top-tier people, all of whom complete skills-based assessments before joining our staff. We maintain a high-performing, collegial culture and pay our staff accordingly.

About you

You should be graduating with a doctoral degree in a quantitative field like economics, mathematics, or statistics. The practical work of this role is probably most aligned with the applied microeconomics subfield (think development, health, labor, or similar), but we also have successful team members from theoretical and behavioral econ backgrounds, and we’re open to applicants from all subfields.

We expect you will be characterized by many of the below qualities. We encourage you to apply if you would use the majority of these characteristics to describe yourself:

  • You are passionate about helping improve global health and alleviate global poverty as much as possible.
  • You are highly skilled at critically analyzing and synthesizing empirical research and understanding how a body of evidence may apply to real-world problems.
  • You are able to plan an efficient approach to exploring complicated questions, including identifying and focusing on the most decision-relevant aspects of a project.
  • You consider the big picture, asking questions like: Is this project appropriately formulated and the best use of my time? What is GiveWell getting wrong in our research?
  • You clearly communicate what you believe and why, as well as what you are uncertain about.
  • You ask a lot of questions, and are curious, rather than defensive, when interrogating your own or others’ work.
  • You are able to execute research that holds up under scrutiny from others and over time.
  • You are respectful, effective, and efficient in your interactions with colleagues as well as external parties.

About GiveWell

GiveWell makes grants to support cost-effective programs that save and improve lives. We focus on global health and poverty alleviation in the lowest-income parts of the world because that is where we’ve found we can have the greatest impact.

Since 2007, we’ve directed over $2.6 billion to cost-effective programs and interventions. In the last two years, we’ve directed more than $500 million to cost-effective programs. GiveWell is one of the world’s largest private funders of global development efforts, and we estimate that the funding we’ve directed will save more than 340,000 lives.

GiveWell is most well-known for recommending a small number of Top Charities, which currently support seasonal malaria chemoprevention, antimalarial nets, vaccine incentivization, and vitamin A supplementation. However, most of our research capacity is devoted to finding cost-effective opportunities outside of those programs.

Recent grants have:

We never take for granted that GiveWell’s work is good for the world. We make our reasoning public and transparent so others can challenge it (sometimes we even pay people to point out our errors). We go to unusual lengths to check our assumptions and assess our impact, including funding research and external analysis to address our uncertainties and insisting that our grantees conduct rigorous monitoring and evaluation. We change our minds when the evidence demands it.

Additional information

We don’t want to miss candidates that could do great things at GiveWell. Practically, that means a GiveWell staff member reviews every application carefully, considering the whole picture of your background and potential. If you’re on the fence about applying because you meet some but not 100% of our preferred qualifications (some studies suggest this hesitation is especially common for women and people of color), we encourage you to apply anyway.

GiveWell is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer by choice. At minimum, this means that we comply with all federal, state, and local EEO and employment laws. Beyond the requirements of those laws, we value our team’s diversity in all respects, and we desire to maintain a work environment free of harassment or discrimination—we want our team members to thrive at GiveWell. If you need assistance or an accommodation due to a disability, contact us at careers@givewell.org. We will consider employment for qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.

By submitting an application, you acknowledge that you have read and consent to GiveWell's Privacy Statement for Applicants. By completing an application exercise, you acknowledge and assent to GiveWell's Work Trial Policy.

Lab Manager and Lecturer position

The Faculty of Economics and Business (EB) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) offers world-class education in economics, fiscal economics, econometrics, actuarial science, and business administration to over 5,000 students. Home to top-tier research groups and 400 staff members, EB is internationally renowned and consists of the Amsterdam Business School and the Amsterdam School of Economics (ASE).

The Amsterdam School of Economics is among the top economics research institutes in Europe. The School has a strong focus on producing outstanding research and world-class teaching and is highly active in international academic networks. The ASE is known for its ambitious and supportive culture with ample opportunity for personal development in an attractive international work environment.

Microeconomics is one of ASE’s four sections, covering research in experimental & political economics, applied microeconometrics, and markets & organizations, while also leading microeconomics courses in FEB’s bachelor’s and master’s programs. The Microeconomics section hosts the Center for Research in Experimental Economics (CREED), one of Europe’s largest groups in experimental economics, with three dedicated laboratories.

We are now recruiting for a combined Laboratory Manager (50%) and Lecturer (50%) position. This appointment includes only limited research time.

As a lab manager, you will be responsible for maintenance of the infrastructure. This involves routine hardware and software upkeep; managing experimental platforms (e.g., oTree) and servers; coordinating with central IT; scheduling lab use; recruiting and maintaining the participant pool; cash management; purchasing and inventory control; ensuring data security, backups, and GDPR/IRB compliance; preparing rooms and equipment and providing on-site technical support during sessions when needed; documenting procedures; and supporting researchers with programming advice and programming.

As a lecturer, you will be responsible for teaching microeconomics courses. The academic year is structured into four six-week blocks and two three-week blocks, during which you’ll spend an average of 7-8 hours per week in the classroom. Initially, you’ll focus on bachelor-level courses, primarily leading tutorials for subjects coordinated and taught by other faculty members. Additionally, you’ll supervise bachelor and master theses. Over time, based on performance, you may take on full course responsibility, including at the master’s level.

The Microeconomics section is a diverse team of 50+ members, ranging from PhD candidates to full professors, each contributing their expertise and perspectives. Currently, six lecturers specialize in teaching, contributing to an environment that values and respects every member’s role in both education and research.

We foster a collaborative atmosphere, with regular team meetings and open communication with colleagues and leadership. Beyond work, informal gatherings provide opportunities to connect in a more relaxed setting.

We are seeking a motivated and passionate lab-manager/lecturer who wants to specialize in academic teaching. The ideal candidate:

· Has experience with experiments in economics and experimental software.

· Has experience with and an interest in microeconomics.

· Is a team player, treating colleagues with respect and professionalism.

· Holds (or is close to completing) a PhD in Economics.

· Has university-level teaching experience; applicants with strong course evaluations are encouraged to apply.

· Is fluent in English and either fluent in Dutch or willing to learn Dutch for teaching purposes.

We offer full-time employment for the period of one year with a probationary period of two months, preferably starting from January 1, 2026, with the prospect of a permanent employment agreement.

The UFO profiles Process Manager (for lab manager) and Docent 3 apply to this position. This position is classified in scale 11. This means a gross monthly salary between € 4,728 and € 6,433 for full-time employment (38 hours per week), excluding holiday allowance (8%) and year-end bonus (8.3%). IFS is Europe’s leading centre for microeconomic research and is an authoritative, independent commentator on a wide range of policy issues, aiming to bridge the gap between academia and the wider public.

The Director is Helen Miller and the Research Director is Imran Rasul. Research at IFS is led by a large number of Co-Directors including James Banks, Richard Blundell, Aureo de Paula, Eric French, Francois Gerard, Rachel Griffth, Attila Lindner, and Fabien Postel-Vinay.

Candidates should have an excellent academic background, a track-record of producing high-quality economic research and experience of and/or commitment to working on the UK context. First rate communication skills and a capacity and willingness to manage and develop junior colleagues are essential. Experience of achieving policy impact through research or of successfully bidding for external funding would be an additional asset. We are particularly interested in candidates working on the topics of public finance, tax, firms and labour markets.

Successful candidates are expected to build on their research agenda at IFS, lead projects aimed at publishing in top economics journals, raise funding, and influence policymaking through direct engagement with policymakers and the media. In addition, they will be expected to engage in mentorship and development of more junior researchers, often including formal line management responsibilities, contribute to the wider intellectual life and running of the institute. They will work within a team of researchers whose direction of research fits with the researcher’s expertise and interests. This will likely include a mix of senior academics and IFS research staff.

These are permanent positions with a remit to help shape, carry out, and communicate empirical research. The IFS promotes from within, and successful candidates would have scope for promotion and to develop a long-term career at IFS. Applicants would join at the top of the pay-scale for IFS Research Economists with the expectation of quick promotion to the position of Senior Research Economist (subject to performance), for which the salary range is currently £73,400 to £90,900. There will be considerable scope for successful candidates to shape future research ideas and to work on new initiatives to communicate our work and shape policy debates.

We welcome applications from individuals who have completed their PhD or students expecting to complete a PhD in 2026.

Applications should be submitted via EconJobMarket. We aim to interview shortlisted candidates at the European Job Market, which will be held virtually in December 15-18, 2025. Subsequent fly-outs will be arranged in January 2026 for short-listed candidates.

If you have any queries, please email jobs@ifs.org.uk.

Sveriges Riksbank, located in Stockholm, is the central bank of Sweden. The Riksbank’s main tasks are to ensure that inflation is low and stable over time, contribute to the stability and efficiency of the financial system, and make sure that payments can be made.

The Research Division at the Riksbank is looking to hire a full-time Research Economist for a permanent position, with an expected start date around September 2026. We welcome applications from junior as well as senior applicants. Suitable candidates will have expertise in theoretical or empirical research on financial economics, international finance, monetary economics, macroeconomics, econometrics, banking or payments. JOB DESCRIPTION

Successful candidates will be expected to produce high-quality research suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals. In recent years, economists at the Research Division have published in top-tier journals such as the Journal of Political Economy, the Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Monetary Economics, and the Journal of Financial Economics.
