We are seeking candidates who have recently completed, or are close to completing, a PhD in economics, finance, statistics, data science or another relevant field for two Senior Economist positions.

You will be part of the Forecasting and Policy Modelling Division in the Directorate General Economics.

Consisting of around 220 staff, our Directorate General analyses, models and forecasts economic developments and policies. It contributes to analytical studies, reports and policy positions, and produces research for publications such as the ECB’s Economic Bulletin, Occasional Paper Series and Working Paper Series, as well as for academic journals. The Directorate General provides advice to the ECB’s decision-making bodies on monetary policy and prepares and coordinates the ECB’s and the Eurosystem’s staff macroeconomic projection exercises. It also contributes to the debate on further deepening Economic and Monetary Union and represents the ECB in various European and international fora.

The Division employs around 20 members of staff with recognised expertise and a strong publication record in macro modelling. We develop and maintain euro area and large country models used at the ECB for the preparation of monetary policy, together with the corresponding data and model platforms. Our research and model-based analysis contributes to the ECB’s and the Eurosystem’s macroeconomic projections, and to the preparation of Governing Council meetings more generally. We also investigate structural issues of relevance for monetary policy.

Current projects include integrating consumer, firm and sector heterogeneity into our models; evaluating the impact of monetary, fiscal and climate policies; exploiting non-traditional data sources and non-linear, machine and deep learning methods for model solution, estimation and forecasting; and methods for quantifying and interpreting risks to the economic outlook.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As a Senior Economist you will:

  • provide research-based policy advice and analysis;
  • plan and steer projects to strengthen the analytical framework and tools used by the Division;
  • contribute to developing a new generation of modelling tools for monetary policy preparation and maintaining existing tools;
  • conduct high-quality research for publication;
  • work closely with the Division’s management to identify and engage with upcoming opportunities and challenges;
  • establish and maintain productive working relationships with internal and external counterparts and contribute to various fora (e.g. the Monetary Policy Committee of the European System of Central Banks, as well as working groups, research conferences and networks).

For these roles we are seeking candidates who demonstrate the potential for growth, and we will support the selected candidates in their development of the required skills.

The positions offer you excellent opportunities to join a dynamic and experienced team, develop and use advanced macroeconomic modelling tools, contribute to monetary policy and learn from leading experts. You will work in a stimulating, receptive environment in which you can apply your research to monetary policy preparation. We also provide access to research assistance, top computing facilities and extensive data, as well as the opportunity to interact with consultants and attend conferences and seminars on various topics. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:

  • a PhD or equivalent in economics, finance, statistics, data science or another relevant field, or close to completing a PhD in one of these fields (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • research papers suitable for publication in high-quality, peer-reviewed academic journals in the areas of macroeconomics, macroeconometrics, forecasting, machine learning or deep learning methods;
  • excellent analytical and quantitative skills, for example in econometrics, time series, machine learning or deep learning, and experience in empirical applications of such methods;
  • excellent presenting skills;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:

  • if you received your PhD more than three years ago, a publication record in line with your seniority, comprising papers published in high-quality, peer-reviewed academic journals.

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.

You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe.

You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.

Working modalities

We offer internationally competitive salaries and allowances. Taxes on salaries, allowances and benefits are paid to the European Communities instead of the national tax authorities. These positions are allocated to salary band F/G, bracket 2 (see What we offer, including the net salary table).

We would be happy to discuss a part-time arrangement for this role.

Further information

The contracts will be convertible into permanent contracts after three years subject to individual performance and organisational needs.

Application and selection process

You are eligible for appointment if you are a national of a Member State of the European Union or an acceding country.

When submitting your application, you will be asked to provide us with a CV, a copy of one of your research papers, and recommendation letters from at least two referees. All documentation must be submitted by 13 November.

The recruitment process for these positions will include a short online interview in the pre-selection phase, which will take place between 10 and 15 December 2025. If you are invited to participate in the subsequent selection phase, you will be asked to present and answer questions on your research paper in seminar format, and to attend further interviews. These seminars and interviews will take place in Frankfurt between 12 and 20 January 2026.

If you are not selected for this position but are still considered suitable, you will be placed on a reserve list (see step 4 of How we hire), from which you might be considered for similar positions within the ECB.

We are pleased to announce an opportunity for a distinguished scholar to join the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) as an Associate Professor or Assistant Professor (tenure-track) within the Transportation Science Division at the Department of Technology, Management and Economics – in short DTU Management.

The position offers a unique platform to conduct pioneering research in Human Mobility while joining DTU’s broader ecosystem of technological knowledge and innovation with the transportation sector.

The Transportation Science Division has a strong domain knowledge of the transport sector and mobility, and is, with its broad coverage of disciplines, an internationally outstanding unit in the field of transportation science. We deliver ground-breaking fundamental research as well as research-based insights and tools for policymakers and industry professionals. We have close collaboration with other research communities nationally and internationally, and with Danish Authorities. This includes a large on-going contract with the Ministry of Transport, where we carry out policy support to solve the great challenges in the transport sector.

The overreaching focus of the position is the importance of understanding human mobility and behaviour when planning and operating transportation systems and formulating policies and regulations. Human behaviour is embedded in our research on transport systems and mobility prediction models. Our research creates a foundation for policy support related to a variety of challenges in the sector such as the green transition, mobility for all user groups, congestion and challenged land use particularly in large cities; equity, safety, and risk; and derived negative externalities of transport.

The division is interdisciplinary with scholars originating from transportation engineering, economics, psychology, computer science, social data science, machine learning, mathematics, and statistics.

As a candidate, you should have a high potential for creative and independent research, willingness to collaborate and interact with other researchers, the ability to teach courses at different levels, to engage in scientific advice and to disseminate research in seminars, conferences, and in the classroom.

We offer an international research environment with a collegial, team-oriented research environment in an elite university based in the Greater Copenhagen area. We have good opportunities for collaboration, supervision, and co-supervision of graduate students and attractive teaching conditions.

Denmark offers abundant funding opportunities for leading edge research from its many private and public research foundations. To support the obtaining of funding, DTU and the department provide highly specialized and individual funding support and guidance depending on your needs and where you are in your career.

Furthermore, Denmark is one of the countries in the world with the highest degree of digitalization, and hence researchers have access to unique longitudinal datasets on households, companies, transport behaviour, etc. DTU has a close collaboration with public authorities, which secures both impacts of research and access to surveys, experimental and register data.

The position is full-time and based at DTU Lyngby campus, just north of Copenhagen. Copenhagen is renowned around the world for its relaxed atmosphere, fantastic restaurants, festivities, and high quality of life, being number one on the 2025 Global City quality of life index.

Responsibilities and qualifications
We seek an Associate or TT Assistant Professor that can advance the research and practice on human mobility, including better understanding of behaviour, preferences, and choices. You have a strong track record in research at an international level. We expect the candidate to develop over the years to exhibit academic leadership, attract grants, teach undergraduate and graduate students, strengthen research-based advice, and contribute to a fruitful environment based on the position. Particular focus will be on our public sector support and societal impact in the transport domain.

You will bring the following:

  • PhD in a relevant topic and discipline related to human mobility, e.g. from Social Data Science, Network Science, Transportation Science, Economics, Geography, Physics, or Computer Science
  • Experience from application areas within the mobility and/or transport domain, and a strong list of publications in these areas
  • Experience with or interest in scientific advice and public sector consultancy within the transport domain
  • A solid international network within and beyond academia
  • An ambition to push boundaries and define future research agendas solving societal challenges

If you are applying for the associate professor position you should also have academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an assistant professorship and documented didactic/pedagogic training.

You must be responsible for the teaching of courses. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Research experience
  • Research vision and potential
  • International impact and experience
  • Societal impact
  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
