The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded research program in financial and agricultural commodity market economics. The appointee’s primary teaching responsibilities are likely to include ARE 138 International Commodity & Resource Markets, 139 Futures & Options Markets, and 171 Principles of Finance. Other courses that the appointee may be asked to teach include UG courses in finance (172 and 173), MS level courses in agricultural economics and finance (223, 271), and PhD level courses in empirical methods (202B, 202C), and agricultural economics (231, 232, and 233). In particular, the candidate will be expected to teach in the undergraduate joint business major, managerial economics major, and the graduate program. Teaching responsibilities will be up to four courses per year, taking rank into account and will be set by the department chair based upon departmental needs and the successful candidate’s interests/expertise. Other responsibilities include student advising and training at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Participation in and development of outreach/engagement programs, and performance of departmental and university service is expected.

Position Details
The Paul Rubacha Department of Real Estate at Cornell University invites applications for an open rank (assistant to full professor), tenured/tenure track nine-month, full-time position in urban economics with an emphasis on real estate markets and the built environment. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in an appropriate field with strong grounding in economics. This position will begin on July 1, 2026, and will be based at Cornell’s Ithaca campus.

Situated within a world-class research university, the Paul Rubacha Department of Real Estate is jointly overseen by the College of Architecture, Art and Planning (AAP) and the S.C. Johnson College of Business (SCJCB). The department manages a two-year professional master’s program in real estate, the Baker M.P.S., with roughly 100 students in residence. A distinguishing feature of the program is its comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to real estate education, reflecting the different types of skills required for many career paths in real estate. This includes expertise in urban planning, architecture, law, engineering, finance, and economics. A further distinguishing feature of the program is its blending of academic in-class instruction along with input from industry professionals and out-of-class experience.
The Rubacha department presently has a complement of five tenured faculty, one senior lecturer, and two Professors of Practice with differing expertise that supports the multidisciplinary structure of both the department and the Baker M.P.S. degree.
The department's center of operations is in Ithaca, New York, where the resources and opportunities for innovative and interdisciplinary collaborations are extensive. Beginning August 2026, the department is launching a NYC option for second-year students in the Baker M.P.S. in real estate. Duties include research, teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and service to the institution. The ideal candidate will conduct empirical research on the economics of transportation electrification, with particular interest in policy-relevant impacts on housing markets, land use, travel behaviour, equity, and/or decarbonization outcomes. Using causal identification strategies, the research is expected to examine how electrification investments interact with behavioural responses, incentives, and/or economic conditions to inform effective, equitable, and sustainable policy design.
Candidates must have completed their PhD in Economics or be near completion at the start date of the appointment. The main criteria for selection are scholarly and teaching excellence. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent potential in empirical economics, with strong skills in causal inference and applied econometric methods. Priority will be given to candidates whose current research examines the economic impacts of transportation electrification, including, for instance, electric vehicle adoption, EV charging infrastructure, urban and regional outcomes, travel behaviour, housing and land-use markets, and other related policy or equity issues. The successful candidate will provide evidence of high-quality scholarly output that demonstrates potential for independent research leading to peer assessed publications and the securing of external research funding, as well as strong potential for outstanding teaching contributions and course development at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, strong letters of reference, the teaching dossier including a statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi, and teaching evaluations, or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities submitted as part of the application. Other teaching-related activities can include performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, and excellent conference presentations or posters.
Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The position comes with both undergraduate and graduate teaching responsibilities.
