The Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy (JSGS) at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) is recruiting for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Public Policy in a Polarized Era. The Canada Research Chairs Program is the flagship of a national strategy to make Canada a world-leading country in research and development and is committed to addressing Research Chair equity gaps.
Canada’s policy context is highly complex, and our understanding of governance needs to be adapted to the realities of dissolving social cohesion, increasing populism, the ongoing processes of reconciliation, and growing distrust of both science and government. The Tier 1 CRC in Public Policy in a Polarized Era will lead cutting-edge research into the governance tools necessary to advance evidence-informed policy in an era of political polarization.
This CRC is both timely and necessary. Both misinformation (false or misleading information) and disinformation (misinformation spread with a deliberate intent to deceive) are on the rise. These dynamics feed political polarization and create a powerful negative feedback loop that makes evidence-informed policy difficult.
Polarization is a broad international social phenomenon that is limiting the potential for science-based advancement to translate into public policy. The context for evidence-informed policy in Canada and other advanced democracies has never been more challenging or complex. If we are to achieve the potential for scientific and technological advancement to address the world’s most challenging problems, there is a need for change.
The CRC will help advance both policy frameworks and policy training. In turn, by improving the context for evidence-informed policymaking, the CRC will:

Please consult the CRC website for eligibility details or contact the University of Saskatchewan's Research Acceleration and Strategic Initiatives (RASI) unit for more information (rasi.support@usask.ca). The impact of leaves (e.g., parental leave, extended leave due to illness, etc.) will be carefully considered when reviewing the candidate’s record of research achievement. Therefore, candidates are encouraged to explain in their application how career interruptions may have impacted their research record.
The successful candidate will be nominated for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair. Once the chair appointment is approved by the CRC Secretariat, the candidate will be appointed as a tenured faculty member in the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy at the Associate Professor or Professor level.
The University of Saskatchewan is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equity in the workplace. IESEG School of Management and The LEM (UMR 9221), a research unit of the University of Lille, invite applications for fully funded Phd position in Economics, with the emphasis on the Economics of Migration and Migration Policy at its Lille campus.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The PhD student will develop a research agenda on the political economics of migration drawing implications for the integration of migrants in destination countries. European societies face increasing challenges in integrating diverse cultural values and norms, making immigration a central topic in political debates. Concerns over cultural differences between natives and immigrants influence public opinion and policy, often fueling populist sentiments. While research on migration and integration is extensive, evidence remains mixed on whether immigrants assimilate into host societies or retain their cultural traits. Some studies suggest immigrants influence institutions and norms in their new countries, while others highlight a gradual adoption of local values through economic and social integration. However, the factors shaping cultural assimilation and persistence remain insufficiently quantified. This project seeks to address this gap by examining how both origin and destination countries shape immigrants' cultural preferences. An important focus will be on the labor market of the host country, particularly the role of skills—both in terms of availability and how they are valued by local employers. Despite the growing immigrant workforce in Europe, little is known about how firms perceive migrant skills compared to those of natives. Moreover, skill downgrading is a common challenge for migrants seeking employment. Beyond labor market integration, demographic and fertility-related factors are relevant too, particularly from a gender perspective. Also, different patterns can relate to the experience of voluntary versus forced migration. The analysis may leverage the use of large-scale European datasets, country-level datasets or experimental research based upon own original data.
SUPERVISION & RESEARCH TEAM
The PhD student will be supervised by Simone Moriconi in collaboration with Riccardo Turati (Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona). The student will also benefit from interactions with a a team specialists in the fields of labor economics, industrial relations, management and demography, which are part of the IFLAME Research Center and the “Economics and Financial Flows” axis of the LEM research unit.
