Your position
The Department of Economics, jointly with Tilburg Sustainability Center, has a vacancy for a 48 months Postdoctoral Researcher in Economics.

We are looking for an environmental economist with strong analytical and quantitative skills, programming experience in either R or python, and motivated to combine rigorous research with social impact. The researcher will develop and analyze economic models for the transition towards a circular economy. It integrates concepts such as circular life cycle assessments, material flow analyses, product as a service, into economic macro general equilibrium models, analyzing distributional effects on income, employment, and resource use across global value chains. We expect publications in top field journals, both in economics and interdisciplinary.

The position is rooted in the NWO funded ACT! project (Accelerating the Circular Transition). It aims at overcoming societal and scientific challenges for the transformation towards a circular society to tackle the existing sustainability challenges. The project develops a toolbox to study this systemic change – providing insights on policies that accelerate the transition towards a circular society.

The new researcher will be supervised by prof. Reyer Gerlagh and is hosted at the Economics department, which offers a large environmental economists group, including Prof. Sjak Smulders, Prof. Daan van Soest, Prof. Herman Vollebergh, and many junior researchers including Dr Julie Metta and Dr Etienne Lorang. The project will also include cooperations with other consortium members, in particular Leiden University, Utrecht University, and the Dutch Environmental Agency, PBL.

The job can include a teaching task and/or thesis supervision, which will be consistent with the role of Postdoc. Preferences for teaching are discussed at the interview and can be part of a balanced job offer.

Your profile
Tilburg University believes that academic excellence is achieved through the combination of outstanding research and education, in which social impact is made by sharing knowledge. We recognize that excellence is achieved through team effort and individual skills.

Join Canada's top policy school as a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Public Policy in a Polarized Era

About the Opportunity

The Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy (JSGS) at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) is recruiting for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Public Policy in a Polarized Era. The Canada Research Chairs Program is the flagship of a national strategy to make Canada a world-leading country in research and development and is committed to addressing Research Chair equity gaps.

Canada’s policy context is highly complex, and our understanding of governance needs to be adapted to the realities of dissolving social cohesion, increasing populism, the ongoing processes of reconciliation, and growing distrust of both science and government. The Tier 1 CRC in Public Policy in a Polarized Era will lead cutting-edge research into the governance tools necessary to advance evidence-informed policy in an era of political polarization.

This CRC is both timely and necessary. Both misinformation (false or misleading information) and disinformation (misinformation spread with a deliberate intent to deceive) are on the rise. These dynamics feed political polarization and create a powerful negative feedback loop that makes evidence-informed policy difficult.

Polarization is a broad international social phenomenon that is limiting the potential for science-based advancement to translate into public policy. The context for evidence-informed policy in Canada and other advanced democracies has never been more challenging or complex. If we are to achieve the potential for scientific and technological advancement to address the world’s most challenging problems, there is a need for change.

The CRC will help advance both policy frameworks and policy training. In turn, by improving the context for evidence-informed policymaking, the CRC will:

  • Improve the quality of life in Canada;
  • Train graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to become policy leaders equipped to advance evidence-informed policy through innovative public engagement research and practices suitable for a polarized political environment; and
  • Create new graduate course offerings on policy and polarization available to students in a wide range of disciplines;
    • Partner with USask researchers in areas highly affected by polarization;
    • Establish international interdisciplinary networks of scholars focused on the issue of evidence-informed policy within a context of polarization; and
      Increase evidence-informed policy tools through JSGS’s strong government connections for use by policymakers.

Qualifications

We are looking for an experienced scholarly colleague with a doctoral degree in political science, public administration, economics, or a related social science discipline. They will have a research track record in an area related to public policy and/or governance.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate excellence in research through academic recognition, impactful publications, successful partnerships, trainee achievements, and impressive external research funding. High-quality teaching at the graduate level and engaging with the public and relevant communities are also important facets of the CRC.

Tier 1 Chairs are intended for outstanding and innovative world-class researchers whose accomplishments have had a major impact in their field and are recognized internationally as leaders in their field. Please consult the CRC website for eligibility details or contact the University of Saskatchewan's Research Acceleration and Strategic Initiatives (RASI) unit for more information (rasi.support@usask.ca). The impact of leaves (e.g., parental leave, extended leave due to illness, etc.) will be carefully considered when reviewing the candidate’s record of research achievement. Therefore, candidates are encouraged to explain in their application how career interruptions may have impacted their research record.

The successful candidate will be nominated for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair. Once the chair appointment is approved by the CRC Secretariat, the candidate will be appointed as a tenured faculty member in the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy at the Associate Professor or Professor level.

The University of Saskatchewan is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equity in the workplace. The candidate must be a member of one of the four federally designated equity groups (women and gender equity-seeking groups, racialized individuals, Indigenous Peoples, and persons with disabilities). Recruitment will be guided by the Canada Research Chairs Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Practices and by the strong commitment of the University of Saskatchewan and JSGS to equity, diversity, and inclusion. The University of Saskatchewan is committed to supporting employees in need of accommodation in an employment context. For more information about the University of Saskatchewan’s accommodation policy, please contact Abdur Rehman, Talent and EDI Consultant (abdur.ahmad@usask.ca) or Jill Pecar, Human Resources Strategic Business Advisor (jill.pecar@usask.ca).

A competitive salary commensurate with experience and appointment will be negotiated. A stipend with guaranteed funding for any required infrastructure and training will be provided following a successful CRC nomination. This position features a comprehensive benefits package, including a dental, health, and extended vision care plan; pension plan; life insurance (compulsory and voluntary); long-term disability and sick leave; travel insurance; death benefits; employee assistance program; professional expense allowance, and a flexible health and wellness spending program.

Application Details

Applications will be accepted and evaluated until the position is filled and are reviewed at time of submission. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2026, but is flexible.

Applications from all outstanding candidates, including international researchers, permanent residents of Canada, and Canadian citizens are encouraged.

Interested and qualified candidates must include the following documents in a single PDF file:

  1. Cover Letter
  2. Curriculum Vitae
  3. Research Statement: This statement (maximum two pages) should describe the candidate's most significant contributions, current lines of enquiry, and future research directions.

Applications must be submitted through the University of Saskatchewan's “Apply Now” button (top left of page) here. Here are some tips on applying and instructions on how to apply. As part of the application process, applicants will be asked to complete a voluntary employment equity survey.

Applicants should describe how equity, diversity, and inclusion principles support their innovative and impactful research and enhance training and learning outcomes.

The Faculty of Social Sciences at McMaster University is seeking outstanding researchers in social science or related disciplines for consideration as Canada Excellence Research Chairs (CERC) nominees.

The CERC program offers eligible Canadian, degree-granting institutions an opportunity to establish research chairs with award values of $1 million per year or $500 thousand per year for eight years in areas that align with the Government of Canada’s science, technology and innovation priorities.

CERC nominations are only available to individuals who are not currently appointed as McMaster faculty members. Successful nominees must be eligible for appointment at the rank of Professor. In exceptional circumstances, applicants may be appointed at the rank of Associate Professor if it can be reasonably expected that they will be promoted to the rank of Professor within two years of the nomination. Candidates not currently in academic positions must possess the qualifications necessary to be appointed at these ranks.

Researchers who hold a full-time academic appointment at a Canadian institution are eligible to be nominated; however, they may not be nominated by the institution at which they currently hold their appointment. If an institution nominates a researcher who is currently at a Canadian institution, the institution must demonstrate the net benefit to the country in moving the researcher from one Canadian institution to another. Please consult the Canada Excellence Research Program website for full program information, including further details on eligibility criteria.

The successful candidate will join the Research Department Establishments and Employment and contribute to a third-party funded project on gig work in Germany. Proficiency in German at the C1 level (according to the CEFR) is required for this position.

Working environment

The Institute for Employment Research IAB is the independent research institute of the German Federal Employment Agency. As one of Europe's leading institutions for labour market research, the IAB provides evi-dence-based advice to policymakers and informs the public about current labour market trends. Located in Nuremberg, the institute maintains strong collaborations with national and international universities and research institutions.

The successful candidate will be integrated into a research project on gig work in Germany, with a particular focus on app-based delivery services. The project investigates the growth and workforce composition of the German gig economy, evaluates its benefits and challenges from a worker’s perspective, and explores its broader labour market implications. Launched in 2023, the project is led by a team that includes Dr Martin Friedrich, Professor Ines Helm, Dr Christoph Müller, and Dr Jan Nimczik. It is generously funded by the German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs BMAS.

Tasks and Prerequisites

The main responsibility of the postdoctoral researcher involves collaborating on joint academic publications. The position holder is expected to analyse existing research data using advanced econometric methods and support the collection of additional data (e.g., through surveys). Furthermore, the findings from the project will be used to inform and advise key stakeholders of the IAB - especially the BMAS - as well as the broader public.

The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background, including a university degree and a doctorate or equivalent qualification, preferably in economics. Extensive professional experience in the field of empirical labour economics is essential, along with knowledge of German economic, labour market, and social policy. The position requires advanced expertise in empirical research methods and their practical application, as well as strong skills in statistical analysis and proficiency in at least one statistical programming language (such as Stata, Python, or R). Familiarity with LaTeX and relevant MS Office applications is also expected. Strong presentation skills and the ability to effectively communicate scientific findings to both academic and policy audiences are essential. Expertise in project management is an asset. Proficiency in German at the C1 level (according to the CEFR) and English at the B2 level is required.

Job Description

The Department of Economics at McMaster University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship. This is a two-year fellowship that shall commence on July 1, 2025.

The successful candidate must either have received their doctorate since July 1, 2020, or expect to do so by December 31, 2025.

The successful applicant will have demonstrated expertise in applied economics in a field such as labour, health, public, or international economics. The fellow will be expected to be actively involved in the daily life of the Department, and will conduct independent research related to productivity, broadly defined. A wide range of research areas will be considered, including but not limited to: human capital (including its interaction with health); immigration; labour markets; education and training; worker and institutional productivity in the health or government sectors or in specific industries; consequences of taxes and transfer programs; investment and financial markets’ international competition; and the effects of regulation and trade policies.

The Productivity Partnership is partially funding this position. Prior experience with the analysis of microdata related to productivity, especially firm or workplace data, would be an asset, particularly if the associated research is relevant to Canada.

This Postdoctoral Fellowship provides an annual stipend of $70,000, which includes the requirement to teach one 3-unit course per year. Furthermore, the Department of Economics will provide up to $8,000 to cover research expenses. These funds can be used for a variety of purposes, including purchasing computer hardware and software, acquiring technical books and journals, and covering travel expenses for conferences.
