The Opportunity

The Department of Economics in the Faculty of Arts at Ryerson University invites applications for two (2) full-time tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor.  The department is seeking candidates in the area of Applied Microeconomics. The first position will have a specialization of Immigration Economics, Health Economics, Industrial Organization, International Trade or Political Economy and the second position will have a specialization of Public Economics, Labor Economics, Environmental Economics, Urban Economics or Behavioral Economics.

 Both appointments shall be effective July 1, 2020, subject to final budgetary approval.

The Department, consisting of 24 tenured or tenure-track faculty members, prides itself both on the quality of its teaching and the breadth and excellence of its research.  The Department offers undergraduate and masters programs with an emphasis on international economics and finance as well as a PhD program in economics.  

This position falls under the jurisdiction of the Ryerson Faculty Association (RFA) (www.rfanet.ca).  The RFA collective agreement can be viewed here and a summary of RFA benefits can be found here. 

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, research and service duties, maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities. Responsibilities will include teaching and supervision at the undergraduate and graduate levels; contributing to the undergraduate and graduate programs including taking a lead role in curriculum development/expansion as appropriate; establishing and maintaining a strong, independent, externally-funded research agenda yielding significant peer-reviewed publications; and participating in the academic life of the Department of Economics, the Faculty and the University through collegial service.

Qualifications

The successful candidates will have completed a PhD in Economics or related field. Candidates who are all-but-dissertation (ABD) and are very close to completion of their PhD may also be considered. The successful candidate must present evidence of:

  • ability to contribute to our undergraduate, masters and PhD programs through high-quality teaching, excellence in research, collegial service and participation in the academic life;
  • ability to establish and maintain an independent, externally-funded research program capable of yielding publications in high quality peer-reviewed journals;
  • excellence in teaching demonstrated via a statement of teaching philosophy and accomplishments;
  • strong communication skills and a demonstrated ability to supervise undergraduate and graduate students;
  • commitment to our values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and
  • an ability to contribute to the life of the Department, Faculty and the University through collegial service.
