The Department of Economics in the Faculty of Arts and Science at Concordia University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Empirical Urban Economics of Transportation Electrification, an area aligned with the Volt-Age electrification research program. Duties include research, teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and service to the institution. The ideal candidate will conduct empirical research on the economics of transportation electrification, with particular interest in policy-relevant impacts on housing markets, land use, travel behaviour, equity, and/or decarbonization outcomes. Using causal identification strategies, the research is expected to examine how electrification investments interact with behavioural responses, incentives, and/or economic conditions to inform effective, equitable, and sustainable policy design.

Candidates must have completed their PhD in Economics or be near completion at the start date of the appointment. The main criteria for selection are scholarly and teaching excellence. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent potential in empirical economics, with strong skills in causal inference and applied econometric methods. Priority will be given to candidates whose current research examines the economic impacts of transportation electrification, including, for instance, electric vehicle adoption, EV charging infrastructure, urban and regional outcomes, travel behaviour, housing and land-use markets, and other related policy or equity issues. The successful candidate will provide evidence of high-quality scholarly output that demonstrates potential for independent research leading to peer assessed publications and the securing of external research funding, as well as strong potential for outstanding teaching contributions and course development at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Candidates are encouraged to share any career interruptions or personal circumstances that may have had an impact on their career goals (such as the decision to have a family, eldercare, illness, and so forth) in their letter of application. These will be carefully considered in the assessment process. The Department values diversity among its faculty and strongly encourages applications from those who will contribute to that profile. Concordia University is an English-language institution of higher learning at which the primary language of instruction and research is English. Since this position supports academic functions of the university, proficiency in English is required. Working knowledge of French, including reading and grading student work in French, is an asset.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and Permanent Residents will be given priority. To comply with the Government of Canada’s (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) reporting requirements, the University is obliged to gather information about applicants’ status as either Permanent Residents of Canada or Canadian citizens. While applicants need not identify their country of origin or current citizenship, all applicants must include one of the following statements:

Yes, I am a citizen or permanent resident of Canada

or

No, I am not a citizen or permanent resident of Canada

All candidates should apply online at econjobmarket.org. Applications should be submitted by January 26, 2026 and must include a cover letter clearly identifying the title and position code, a detailed curriculum vitae, a job market paper, research and teaching statements, evidence of teaching effectiveness (if available) and letters from at least three referees. Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled. Only short-listed candidates will be notified. The appointment is expected to commence on August 1, 2026. Inquiries may be directed to the Chair of the Department of Economics, Dr. Jorgen Hansen, at Jorgen.Hansen@concordia.ca.

Position Introduction

We are seeking multiple highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to join an interdisciplinary research team engaged in a close collaboration with a leading global ride-hailing platform. This ambitious project aims to advance our understanding of digital marketplace design by studying the interactions between customers and drivers, as well as the platform’s operational and strategic choices.

A defining strength of this collaboration is access to exceptionally rich, high-resolution proprietary data from the platform. This unique dataset supports rigorous empirical analysis and enables high-fidelity modeling and simulation of marketplace dynamics at scale. Research topics span a broad set of questions, including how pricing strategies, incentive structures, dispatch algorithms, and service quality shape the behavior and outcomes of customers, drivers, and the platform itself.

We welcome applicants with strong backgrounds in causal inference, structural estimation, advanced machine learning, and simulation. We are especially interested in scholars eager to apply cutting-edge methods to real- world data to uncover insights that are both academically rigorous and practically actionable. The overarching goal is to inform the design of smarter, more equitable, and more efficient platform ecosystems.

The position will be formally affiliated with the School of Management and Economics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen). The postdocs will be supervised by Prof. Yiming Zhang of CUHK-Shenzhen. The research team includes the following faculty from other institutions: Prof. Qiuping Yu (Georgetown), Prof. Yong-Pin Zhou(University of Washington), and Prof. Yunan Ji (Georgetown).

Since 2018, our research team has maintained a close collaboration with this ride-hailing platform. Our prior work has focused on the design and optimization of virtual queuing systems, combining large-scale randomized field experiments with structural modeling to generate actionable insights. Research from this partnership has been published in Management Science and received multiple awards, including the MSOM Service Management SIG Best Paper Award, INFORMS Service Science Best Paper Award, and the CSAMSE Best Practice Award. Notably, our recommended strategies were adopted platform-wide and led to an 80% improvement in customer experience.

Research Team

  • Prof. Yiming Zhang is an Assistant Professor of Operations Management at the School of Management and Economics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. His research focuses on platform operations. He has extensive collaboration experience with platform firms, including the ride-sharing, food delivery, and logistics platforms. His work has been published in Management Science and has received several best paper awards.
  • Prof. Qiuping Yu is an Associate Professor of Operations Management and Business Analytics at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business. Her research explores how digital and service platforms can improve operational efficiency and equity by harnessing real-world behavioral data from both consumers and workers. She employs a range of methods—including large-scale field experiments, structural modeling, and machine learning—to generate actionable insights on platform design, labor scheduling, and fairness across sectors such as ridesharing, retail, restaurants, customer service, and law enforcement. Her work has been published in leading academic and practitioner outlets, including Management Science, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, Harvard Business Review, and Brookings Research Briefs in Economic Policy, and has been featured in major media such as The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg Businessweek.

ECONOMIST / Sr. ECONOMIST

About CEGIS

Centre for Effective Governance of Indian States (CEGIS – pronounced See-Jis) aims to improve lives by helping Indian state governments deliver better development outcomes. We believe that well-functioning governments share at least four features with high-performing organisations: (a) outcome measurement and data driven decision making: which requires appropriate data collection (on both inputs and outcomes), analysis, insight generation, and decision making at different levels of government; (b) effective personnel management including – competency-based hiring and training, adequate staffing, appropriate job assignments, and performance measurement and management; (c) strategic public finance where attention is paid to both the quantity and quality of expenditure and revenue, and where resource allocation is based on evidence and cost-effectiveness; (d) and creating efficient systems to leverage markets and external actors (including for-profit and nonprofit organisations). At CEGIS, we support state governments to build these foundations so that they can deliver development outcomes more effectively.

CEGIS works closely with the political and bureaucratic leadership in Indian states to achieve transformational change. We are currently present in 8 states - Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, BTR (Assam), Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Odisha. We also partner with union agencies/ministries such as Capacity Building Commission, Ministry of Women & Child Development (MoWCD), Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) to share insights from our state-level work and disseminate them broadly. We also collaborate closely with academics and research institutions to ensure our work is grounded in rigorous research and evidence-based practices.

CEGIS Approach and Model of Functioning

Our solutions to enhance governance are co-created with state governments in a “state-led” way, where we focus on deep partnerships with states with an iterative cycle of “think-demonstrate-document-transfer”. We work closely with the top bureaucratic leadership, front-line workers and public officials in Finance, Planning, Human Resources and a few other priority line departments. Many of our solutions reflect ideas outlined in our founder Prof. Karthik Muralidharan’s book (Accelerating India’s Development), and these solutions are constantly being refined based on real-time feedback and are designed to both be customized to the contexts we are working in, and to create templates that can provide the starting point for replication across contexts.

To further explore the mission of CEGIS and the impact we hope to have, please take a look at this video of our CEO, Dr Vijay Pingale.

Position Summary: Economist/Sr. Economist

As the demand for CEGIS’s offerings is growing, we aim to hire multiple Economists to join the “Economics and Statistics Unit” (ESU) at CEGIS to conduct economic analysis focused on state-level policy issues in India. Fellows join a vibrant interdisciplinary community, participate in professional development activities, and collaborate across departments to advance Duke's Climate Commitment. The program emphasizes faculty-mentored research, teaching innovation, and public engagement, providing Fellows with resources and networks to launch impactful careers. To learn more about the SCALES Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, visit our program page: https://climate.duke.edu/what-were-doing/scales-postdoctoral-fellows-program/

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

RESEARCH COLLABORATION:

The SCALES Postdoctoral Fellow will co-develop and lead a faculty-mentored interdisciplinary research project addressing a significant climate, environment, or sustainability challenge. A final research proposal and budget will be developed jointly with the mentoring team following the Fellow's arrival, allowing flexibility for the Fellow to shape the project's direction and methods.

The preliminary description of the research project is as follows:

The Fellow will lead an interdisciplinary research project titled "Beyond Avoided Damages: Linking Risk, Behavior, and Finance in Climate Resilience Planning." The project examines how flood risk and resilience investments influence economic behavior, real estate markets, and municipal fiscal capacity, and how these dynamics can be leveraged to value and finance climate resilience at scale.

We seek a Fellow with a strong background in applied economics or finance who is eager to collaborate with engineers, climate scientists, economists, and policy scholars. Working with faculty mentors and partners through RESILE (Risk Science for Climate Resilience), CIRCAD (Center for Innovation in Risk, Catastrophes and Decisions), the Nicholas Institute, and the Economics department, the Fellow will: - Lead empirical analyses linking flood risk, resilience investments, and urban economic outcomes;

- Examine fiscal and financial feedback, including impacts on property values, tax revenues, and insurance markets; and

- Collaborate on the development of an integrated modeling and decision-support framework that links risk, behavioral, and finance.

TEACHING & ENGAGEMENT:

The Fellow will contribute to Duke's Climate & Sustainability Fluency Framework through curricular innovation, student mentorship, and applied engagement. Teaching responsibilities will emphasize module development and co-teaching rather than independent course ownership.

Specifically, the Fellow will develop and pilot a cross-listed module on Valuing and Financing Climate Resilience, with mentorship from the Department of Economics and collaboration across Trinity, Nicholas, Pratt, Fuqua, Sanford Schools. The Fellow will also mentor students through Climate+ and Bass Connections projects and co-design applied workshops with RESILE and the Nicholas Institute to engage municipal and industry partners in resilience valuation and decision-support applications. These activities will advance SCALES's goal of cultivating climate scholars who connect research with real-world impact.
